Nipple Reduction

Enlarged nipples can be caused by breast feeding, weight loss, weight gain or can sometimes run in the family. The average projection of a nipple is 6-10mm however the ideal size is based on your own breast or chest measurements.

Nipple reduction is a procedure that decreases the height and or the width of the nipple, and therefore reshaping it into a more desirable form. The procedure can be requested by men or women who feel that their nipples are large in proportion to the rest of the breast or who feel self-conscious by the size of their nipples which can protrude through certain clothing, swimwear or underwear. At UKSKIN, the procedure is done under local anaesthetic and takes around 60 minutes. There will be a small incision and removal of tissue excess. The wound will be closed using absorbable stitches and will be covered with dressings. The scar would fade away over time.

Like in any other surgical procedure, there is a small risk of asymmetry, bleeding, infection, healing problems, scaring and necrosis. It is important to highlight that you will be unable to breastfeed following nipple reduction surgery. There will also be a temporarily change to nipple sensation that can last for few months.

You should be able to return to work and social activities within 1 week after surgery but you should avoid strenuous exercise for 6 weeks. You will be reviewed and looked after until the wound is completely healed. Scars should fade and flatten anywhere from three months to one year after surgery.
