At UKSKIN Manchester we are the leading eyelid reduction specialists. We have an outstanding reputation for providing exceptional quality eyelid reduction procedures, and our highly trained team of surgeons are the UK’s leading experts in eyelid surgery.

As we age, our eyelids stretch and the muscles that support them weaken. As a result, our skin begins to sag or droop leaving the eyes looking tired and dull. Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, removes excess skin from the upper or lower eyelids. This makes our eyes look younger and more alert.

Why Consider Eyelid Surgery?

The delicate skin around our eyes is one of the first to show signs of ageing. Often our eyes can look puffy and tired no matter how well we take care of ourselves.

Eyelid surgery is a common facial surgery performed at our Manchester clinic, that makes the eyes appear more open and reduces the common signs of ageing. It involves removing excess skin, muscle, and fat from the eyelids, increasing space around the eye as well as reducing puffiness and wrinkles.

There are two types of eyelid surgery: the upper eyelid between the eyebrow and the eyelashes which can improve your vision as well as the aesthetic appearance of the eye.

Lower eyelid surgery is performed between the eyelash and the cheek and results in a smoother, more youthful-looking eye area with reduced wrinkles, swelling and puffiness.

Surgically removing excess skin and fat reshapes the eye contour so that it looks more open and youthful.  For some patients, eyelid surgery can also help to improve the symmetry of the eyes.

The Eyelid Surgery Process

Surgery to reduce the upper eyelids is performed under local anaesthetic. For the lower eyelids, a general anaesthetic is used.

Upper eyelid surgery involves making an incision along the fold of the eyelid to remove fat, skin, or muscle. The incision is then closed and a dressing is applied.

In lower eyelid surgery, an incision is made directly below the eyelashes along the eyelid crease. The excess fat, skin, or muscle is then either removed or redistributed before the incision is closed and protected with a dressing.

If your surgery involves double eyelid surgery, your surgeon will work on your upper eyelids first before moving on to the lower eyelids.

It takes approximately 90 minutes to complete each procedure, including recovery time. It is common to experience some bruising, swelling, and temporary numbness following the procedure.

With every surgery, there is a risk of discomfort, bleeding, infection, wound healing problems and scarring. Your preliminary consultation will include a detailed discussion of all possible risks and complications.

Recovery & Expert Aftercare

Following the procedure, you will be monitored for complications and provided with painkillers and antibiotics if necessary. You will be given a comprehensive aftercare pack and will be able to go home on the same day, however, you will need to be accompanied by a friend or member of your family.

Three days after surgery, you'll come back to the clinic for a dressing change, and six days later, the stitches will be removed. Your surgeon will perform a final check-up two months after your surgery.

After eyelid surgery, visible results usually appear within a few weeks. Any scarring will fade with time, leaving a long-lasting result.

We are here to help if any complications arise following your surgery. You can contact the clinic via telephone, email or WhatsApp to speak with a member of staff.

Your treatment journey

The procedure can be performed under local anaesthetic and takes approximately 90  minutes to complete, including recovery. The skin will be incised and the excess trimmed off. The wound will be closed with sutures and a dressing will be applied on.

Following the procedure it is common to experience bruising, swelling and temporary numbness. As with all surgical procedures, there is a risk of discomfort, bleeding, infection, wound healing problems and scarring.

Once the procedure is complete, you can go home on the same day, however, you will need to be accompanied by a friend or member of your family. You will be given painkillers and occasionally a five day course of antibiotics to take home. You will be up and mobile on day one post-op, however, you will need to avoid any heavy lifting, exercise, swimming, driving and travel for one week. This gives plenty of time for the swelling to go down. Residual swelling can take up to ten weeks to settle down completely.

We will see you on day 3 post-op to change the dressings and assess the wounds, then see you again on day 6 to remove the sutures. Finally the surgeon will see you two months later for a final check-up.

A visible improvement from the eyelid surgery can appear usually just few weeks after surgery. Scars eventually fade away and the result should be long-lasting.

You will be reviewed and closely looked after at UKSKIN until the wounds are completely healed. If you experience any problems or have any queries following your surgery, we are always here to help. Please use our WhatsApp number provided to get in contact with one of our expert staff members.
