Basal Cell Carcinoma
Basal Cell Carcinoma
What is Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)?
Basal Cell Carcinoma or BCC (commonly known as Rodent Ulcer) is a malignant tumour of keratinocytes skin cells located in the stratum germinativum layer of the hair follicles. Therefore it appears only on Hairy areas but never on Palms or soles of feet. BCC is more common in North Europeans, fair skin people or people who take Immuno-suppressants or chemotherapy treatment.
BCC is the most common skin cancer in the world. Although there is no official number but skin professionals treat around 0.5 Million per year just in the UK. Thankfully BCC is harmless as it never spread to organs therefore it is not a life threatening condition.
The NHS usually offers a rapid diagnosis of skin cancer but the waiting time to get it removed can be extremely long taking several months. UK Skin offers a private skin cancer treatment service for patients who would like to explore a faster option than the NHS. There is no need for a referral from your GP or hospital.
The procedure will be done under local anaesthetic and would last approximately 30 minutes. The skin needs to be incised and the cancer cut out with some margins. The wound will be closed with sutures and a dressing will be applied on. It will leave a linear scar that usually fades away over the years. The removed lesion will be sent to Histology to be analysed under microscope. Patient will be reviewed to discuss the result. Communication between our Clinic and the NHS is upheld rigorously and we will keep your GP informed of the outcome.
