What is a Congenital Melanocytic Nevus (CMN)?
CMN is a Benign Tumour of Skin Nevus Cell present from birth. They tend to be light pink at the beginning then become light or dark brown. They can be hairy or hairless. The Large ones can be associated with some organ disorders and the risk of a skin cancer called melanoma arising in them is considerable.
CMN affects 1-6% of the population. Most patients who want to remove them is mainly for a cosmetic reason.
Laser could be an option for treatment however it will leave a pink/red patch behind and also there will be no sample to send to histology in order to analyse the lesion and be completely sure that there were no abnormal cells within the nevus.
The surgical treatment is a good option in order to analyse the cells within the nevus.
The procedure will be done under local anaesthetic and would last approximately 30 minutes. The wound will be closed with sutures and a dressing will be applied on. It will leave a linear scar that usually fades away over time.
